هذا الكتاب جمع فيه مؤلِّفُه "علي بن ظافر الأزدي" أخبارَ الشعراء في البدائه والإرتجال، ومحاسن أشعارهم في مضايق الإسراع والإعجال، وبدائع البدائه فنٌّ لم يجمعه قبله أحدٌ ولا سطّرته قبل يده يدٌ، كما يقول المؤلف في مقدمة كتابه.
والفرق بين البديهة والإرتجال بيَّنه المؤلف، حيث يقول: "الإرتجال هو أن ينظم الشاعر ما ينظم في أوحى من خطف البارق وإختطاف السارق، وأسرع من التماح العاشق ونفوذ السهم المارق... والبديهة: أن ينزل عن هذه الطبقة قليلاً ويفكّر مقصّراً لا مطيلاً، فإن أطال ذو البديهة الفكرة انعكست القضية وخرجت من حدّ البديهة إلى حدّ الرؤية".
وقد جعله في خمسة أبواب:
الباب الأول: في بدائع بدائه الأجوبة.
الباب الثاني: في بدائع بدائه الإجازة.
الباب الثالث: في بدائع بدائه التمليط.
الباب الرابع: في بدائع بدائه الإجتماع على العمل في مقصود واحد.
الباب الخامس: في بقية بدائع البدائه.
