هذا الكتاب يعتبر دائرة معارف الثعالبي فقد أودع فيه فيه ضروباً من المعرفة, و ألواناً من العلوم, بين شعر و نثر, و فقه و تفسير, و تاريخ وبلدان, و حديث و رجالو و أمثال العرب و أيامها, و أخبارها و أنسابها, مستشهداً بما يروق من نظم المتقدمين و المتأخرين, يزينه أحياناً بنظم من بنات أفكاره, و أبيات أشعاره, و قلما يصرح بنسبها إلى نفسه, بل يخفي شخصه تواضعاً تحت ستارة: و قال بعض أهل العصر. و هو ينتقل بقارئه من زهرة إلى زهرة, فلا يشعر بالملل, و لا يعتريه السأم و الضجر, بل يلهث متشوقاً خلف المواد و العبارات و الاستطرادات حتى إذا بلغ الغاية و أشرف على النهاية, حن إلى نعاودة القراءة, تحدوه رغبة في الاستزادة و شوق إلى ارتشاف الضرب من شهد الثعالبي.
