ليس من المبالغة في شيء حين يُنظر إلى الرواية العربية مرتبطة باسم محفوظ رغم وجود عدد كبير من الروائيين العرب المتميزين، ولكن القارئ أو الباحث غالباً ما يستبطن تجربة محفوظ كمعيار وبوصلة تحدّد وجهة الرواية العربية، إنه العمود الأساس فيها ولا تتّضح إتجاهاتها ومعالم خريطتها دون تحديد مقدار الإقتراب من محفوظ أو الإبتعاد عنه.
إن درس نجيب محفوظ هو الدرس الأبلغ في مسيرة الرواية العربية حتى اليوم، ولقد استمرت الرواية العربية في عصر نجيب وبعده، ولكن يبدو أن القمّة التي بلغتها أعماله لم تتجاوزها الأعمال المعاصرة له أو اللاحقة لتجربته، وهو في ذلك يمثل تحدّياً محفّزاً للرواية العربية الجديدة، وهي تتطلّع إلى وجوه بليغة تعبّر عن إنفتاح الكنز الروائي والسردي، ذلك الكنز الذي أغدق محفوظ عليه من جواهره، فأغناه وضاعف من قيمته.
