وسيجد كل من يريد فهم الأسس التاريخية والجيوسياسية للقرن الحادي والعشرين في عمل وحياة نيدر ماير وجهات نظر محيرة وتحذيرات مؤثرة، حيث إن درب حياته تعين بين عامي 1885 و1948 من خلال رحلات بحثية غريبة، وبعثات اتصفت بالسرية، ومعاناة سياسية مضطرمة.
يجري التاريخ المدهش لهذه الشخصية الأكثر غموضاً في ماضي السياسة الألمانية بين جبال أفغانستان، ومراكز السلطة في برلين، وغياهب سجون موسكو، ذلك أن صاحبها كان عام 1916 القائد العسكري للبعثة الألمانية في أفغانستان، ثم ضابط إرتباط جيش الرايش مع موسكو، بينما شغل - كواحد من الذين حظوا بثقة هانس فون سيكت وكصديق لكارل هاوسهرفر - منصب أستاذ مدرس في برلين قبل أن يقود كضابط برتبة جنرال فرقة المشاة 162 (التركية) التابعة لجيش الرايش، ويعتقل بعد العشرين من تموز عام 1944 ليحرر نهاية الحرب من سجنه، ومن بعد يموت أخيراً عام 1948 في معتقل سوفييتي.
