يرى المؤلف بأن التصوف في أصله بعيد عن الدين الإسلامي، وأن الدين الإسلامي حين جاء لم يكن فيه هذا الاتجاه كما هو معروف لدى المثقفين ثقافة إسلامية. وإنما جاء هذا التصوف إلى الدين الإسلامي وإلى مجتمع الإسلام في أواخر القرن الثاني الهجري، وذلك مع ترجمة العلوم والثقافة اليونانية وغيرها إلى العربية، واطلاع المسلمين على تلك الثقافات. وفي هذا الكتاب ينبه المؤلف إلى ذلك ويبين أن الصوفية والكرامات والموالد هي محض بدع تخرج المسلم عن جادة الصواب، وتبعده عن العقيدة الإسلامية التي لا يمكن أخذها إلا من مصدريهما الكتاب والسنة.
