تصدر هذه الطبعة بعد سبع سنوات من سابقتها، ومن محاسن الصدف أن تصدر هذه الطبعة الجديدة في أول قرن جديد، وفي صدر هذه الألفية الثالثة من حياة الإنسان على ظهر هذا الكوكب تزايدت مشكلات الإنسان مع نفسه ومع المحيطين به، ولا ينسحب ذلك على الإنسان الفرد فحسب بل علة الجماعات الإنسانية والدول أيضًا، لقد حقق الإنسان في القرن الماضي فقط تقدمًا تقنيًا يوازي ما حققه في القرون الماضية جميعًا قبل هذا القرن، وعلى الرغم من ذلك فلم يتحقق كثير من التقدم في حل مشكلات الإنسان الفرد والجماعات الإنسانية والدول، فمازالت الأسقام والعلل الجسيمة والنفسية تتزايد، فعلى المستوى الجسمي هناك مائتا ميكروب على الأقل يخلق كل عام، وعلى المستوى النفسي فلنقارن تصنيف الأمراض النفسية في الدليل التشخيصي والإحصائي الأول الصادر عن الرابطة الأمريكية للأطباء النفسيين عام 1952 والدليل الرابع الصادر عام 1994 عن الرابطة ذاتها، وسنجد تضخمًا في الدليل الأخير.
وعلم النفس - كما يذكر الفيلسوف "بيرتراند راسل" منذ وقت مبكر - "هو العلم الذي سينقذنا من العلم" والشخصية - في رأينا - جوهر علم النفس وليه، وجماع فروعه، وإن فهم الشخصية ومعرفة أبعادها وتركيبها في سوائها ومرضها لهو أمر أساسي بالنسبة لفهم الإنسان ودوافعه والإسهام في حل مشكلاته مع نفسه ومع غيره، ومن نافلة القول أن نذكر أن القياس أمر أساسي للعلوم جميعًا ومنها علم النفس، وتصدر هذه الطبعة الثالثة مشتملة تعديلات محددة ومحدودة، وذلك في اتجاه تصويب المادة وتنقيحها وتحديث بعضها، وأرجو أن يكون في هذا الكتاب ما ينتفع به.
