إنني أكتبُ تاريخاً للمغلوبين..
تاريخاً لا يشعر المرء وهو يقرأه بالفخر والثقة، بل بالانكسار والحزن. فالتاريخ عادة هو تاريخ المنتصرين ومنشدي أناشيد النصر، ومعه يشعر من يقرأه بأنّه مع الواقفين والمتقدّمين في الحياة.
هكذا، ومنذ البداية، أنا أكتب سيرة فاشلة، وأليمة، وأحكم على نفسي بالوقوف في صفّ الفاشلين، أنا الأرستقراطيّ التفكير وعديم الرحمة تجاه المنحطّين، وأحكم على جهدي هذا بالفشل!
لكنْ مهلاً! فإنّ هذه السيرة عن حياة حمار بذاته، والتي أختصر بها تاريخ سلالته كلّها منذ القِدَم، فتغدو سيرة حياة الحمار كنوع، هي سيرةٌ كذلك للحياة البرّيّة كلّها في هزيمتها وتدهورها، من دُجّن منها ومن لم يُدجَّن. وماذا بقي الآن من الحياة البرّيّة بغير تدجين؟!
هذه الحياة كلّها قد تحوّلت إلى حديقة خلفيّة لمنزل الإنسان؛ إلى بيئةٍ ومرافقَ حيويّةٍ ومكان انتفاع. صار كلّ ما في الطبيعة من جماد وأحياء تحت سيطرته وتحكّمه واستغلاله، وكأنّه إله. لقد كانت الطبيعة تُعبد أرباباً بغير عَدٍّ، وتُمثَّل حيواناتُها آلهةً مقدَّسة، ثمَّ غابت تلك الألوهة وحلّت ألوهة أخرى مفردة ولها صورة إنسان. وهذا في معنىً عميقٍ لا يخفى. فأينما توجَّهتَ فثمَّة وجه الإنسان.
هذه هي البرّيّة المقهورة اليوم. ولكنْ ما وقع عليه القهر منذ ألفيّات، يستحقّ الرأفة أكثَر، وأن يُذكر بإسهابٍ.
