ترصد هذه الدراسة تطور نظرة الغربيين الى الشرق من القرون الوسطى حتى نهاية القرن العشرين، عبر تحليل نماذج أدبية لكتّاب فرنسيين معروفين، أمثال بوستيل وراسين وفولتير وفولناي وشاتوبريان وهوغو ولامارتين وفلوبير وبرتران وغيرهم، وصولاً الى مطلع الألفية الثالثة ومفترق 11 أيلول/سبتمبر وتداعياته، مع رينه مارشان وميشال ويلبيك وانتشار الإسلاموفوبيا. إنها تبيّن كيف أن معظم هؤلاء الأدباء عكسوا في نتاجهم المقولات الثابتة الراسخة في أذهان مواطنيهم والتي اتخذت شكل قوالب نمطية، فأتى "تمثيل" الشرق من خلال مفاهيم وصور لا علاقة لها بالواقع في أغلب الأحيان.
ولكن، وبالرغم من هذه النظرة المضلِّلة بفعل طغيان الموروث الثقافي والإيديولوجي على الفكر النقدي والموضوعي، تدعو الدراسة الى محاذرة الوقوع في فخ "الاستشراق المعكوس" أو التسليم بمقولة صراع الحضارات، وبأن "الشرق هو الشرق والغرب هو الغرب"، ذاك أن التحدي الحقيقي يكمن في الإيمان بتفاعل الثقافات وبدورها المشترك في قيام مجتمعات أكثر إنسانية.
