لقد كانت الهيئة الشائعة التي تداولها الفلكيون العرب خلال فترة القرون الوسطى هي الهيئة التي وصفها بطليموس القلوذي في كتابه المعروف بكتاب المجسطي، وقد أكمل وصفها في كتابه الثاني المعروف بكتاب المنشورات. ويمكن تلخيص هذه الهيئة بوصفها أنها تعتمد على الأرصاد القديمة التي تسلمها بطليموس والأرصاد التي أجراها هو، كما تعتمد على أصول علم الطبيعة اليوناني الذي كان شائعاً آنذاك وبالتالي جاءت هذه الهيئة على أنها وصف لحركات كرات فرضت لكل كوكب من الكواكب السيارة. وقد كان للفلكيون العرب اجتهاداتهم في هذا المجال.
ويأتي كتاب الهيئة لمؤيد الدين العرضي يمثل إحدى المحاولات التي قام بها الفلكيون العرب، خلال القرون الوسطى، والتي أرادوا منها إعادة بناء الهيئة اليونانية التي تسلموها عبر كتاب المجسطي وكتاب المنشورات لبطليموس القلوذي، الفلكي اليوناني. والجدير بالذكر أن الهيئة اليونانية البطلمية تلك كانت هي الهيئة المهيمنة طوال فترة القرون الوسطى حتى عصر كوبرنيك، الذي تُعزى إليه الثورة العلمية التي انبثق عنها العلم الحديث.
فالكتاب المحقق هنا ليس سوى حلقة واحدة من سلسلة محاولات قام بها الفلكيون العرب، ومرامها هو تخليص هيئة بطليموس من هذه الشوائب المنهجية التي ألمّت بها. ومؤلف هذا الكتاب هو المهندس الدمشقي المعروف بمؤيد الدين العرضي الذي اشتهر بسبب بنائه مرصد مراغة أيام الدولة الإيلخانية، وفي أثناء وزارة نصير الدين الطوسي.
