يتناول حقائق الظاهرة اللغوية من خلال ثلاثة علوم إنسانية هي علم اللغة وعلم النفس وعلم الاجتماع. أما مسائل علم اللغة فهي حاضرة في الكلام عن التنشئة واكتساب اللغة، إذ يتكلم القسم الأول من الكتاب عن الطفل في البيت والمدرسة وعن البالغ. وأما مسائل علم النفس فهي موضوع القسم الثاني، إذ يدور الكلام عن العقل الفردي وعن السلوك والشعور. ويبقى الكلام عن مسائل علم الاجتماع ليستغرق القسم الثالث، فيكون الكلام عن اللغة في الصناعة وفي الحرب وفي السياسة والتكامل الاجتماعي والنزاع الاجتماعي أيضاً.
وهكذا يكون موضوع الكتاب هو اللغة من وجهات نظر علمية متعددة ليجد كل قارئ فيه ما يناسب مطلبه من قضايا المعرفة.
