في كتاب جون بَنيان الشهير: رحلة الحاج، الذي نُشر في 1678 نقرأ عن بلدة خيالية تدعى غرور، حيث يُعقد معرض / سوق - سوق مكشوف مع ترفيهات.
تقترح الكلمة: "غرور"، كبرياء وبلاهة وخيبة أمل؛ لذلك يمكن إعتبار "سوق الغرور" كمكان حيث ينفق الناس نقودهم على أشياء جذّابة لكنها بلهاء تفشل في إرضائهم.
تسخر سوق الغرور بإستمرار من ذلك الجزء الصغير من المجتمع الإنجليزي الذي يبدو أنه لا يقوم بعمل مفيد أبداً ويكون لديه الكثير جداً من المال - إنْ كانت هذه هي الحالة حقاً أو لم تكن.
في سوق الغرور يُنظر إلى الناس كالأذكى والأهم، فأولئك الذين يعملون بجدية أكبر يُظَن بأنهم الأقل أهمية، وأولئك الذين يكونون شرفاء يظهرون كبلهاء.
لذلك فإننا نقابل في هذا الكتاب ناساً أغنياء وخدمهم، مع أناس في الطريق لأن يصبحوا أغنياء، أو في ا لطريق ليصبحوا فقراء؛ مع الناس الذين يرغبون في أن يعيشوا مثل الأغنياء والكسالى، مع أنهم لا يملكون الكثير من المال.
بعض الناس أشرار، والقليلون جداً طيبون، ليس أي واحد منهم حكيماً جداً، حتى إذا كان هو أو هي طيب أو طيبة.
إن الأغنى والأكثر شراً هو المركيز ستايين، لقب المركيز هو ثاني أعلى رتبة لأولئك الذين تصل إليهم ألقابهم من آبائهم، أو أُعطيت لهم مقابل خدمات قدموها لبلادهم، وتُمرَّر هذه الألقاب عند موتهم إلى أكبر أبنائهم سناً.
إن الأدنى نبالة بين أولئك الذين ألقابهم تنحدر على هذا النحو هو البارونيت، هناك بارونيتان في القصة، كلاهما يدعى سيربيت كروُلي الأب وكروُلي الإبن، لا يسمح للبارونيتات أن يجلسوا في مجلس اللوردات المحجوزة لرتب أعلى في النبالة.
