الآنسة "أودري لويس" طالبة جامعية في المرحلة الأخيرة من دراستها تعمل في أوقات فراغها جليسة أطفال لكسب عيشها.. ساقها القدر للعمل لدى أسرة "دوجلاس بالدوين" الموظف الكبير في إحدى دور النشر الشهيرة في "نيويورك". كانت زوجته عارضة الأزياء قد هجرته بعد أن رزق منها بطفل لا يكاد يتعدى الخامسة من عمره وأصبحت تؤرق حياته مشكلة واحدة: كيف يقوم على رعاية ابنه وتربيته التربية الصحيحة.. إن هذا الأخير بحكم ظروفه يعيش طفولة مضطربة كلها نزوات وشطحات وهو في حاجة إلى الكثير من الحب والرعاية والصبر، ولكن والده بحكم انغماسه في عمله لا يستطيع أن يكون له بمثابة الأب والأم معاً.
وتظهر "اودري لويس" على مسرح الأحداث. إنها تعاني عقدة نفسية رهيبة من جراء الحياة الصعبة التي عاشتها بعد وفاة أمها. لقد كرست كل وقتها لتربية أشقائها مضحية في سبيل ذلك بشبابها وحريتها وأصبحت تكره الأمومة والأطفال.
تقع أودري لويس في حب مخدومها "دوجلاس بالدوين" ولكن ابنه يقف عقبة في طريق هذا الحب... ويتولى الصراع بين الأب المحب والمرأة الشابة التي تكره الأطفال.
