الحكم والأمثال والأقوال المأثورة موجودة فى كل ثقافات العالم، وهى تلخص بكلمات قليلة تجارب إنسانية عدة منذ بدء الخليقة، ولما كان السياق هو الذى يحكم تلك الحكم والأمثال والأقوال، فإننا كثيرًا ما نجد أنفسنا أمام عبارات متناقضة. نقول - بالفصحى - مثلاً "صنعة فى اليد أمان من الفقر"، إلا أن صنعة أو أكثر قد لا تكون كافية، فترد العامية "سبع صنايع والبخت ضايع". يقول الأب لابنه "القرش الأبيض ينفع فى اليوم الأسود"، فيقول له أصدقاء السوء "اصرف ما فى الجيب يأتيك ما فى الغيب"
فى هذا الكتاب يقف المؤلف أمام مائة قول مأثور فى اللغة الإنجليزية كثيرًا ما يرددها الناس دون تفكير، على الرغم من أن كلا منها لا يقبض سوى على جزء من الحقيقة، وربما لا يصبح فى محله فى سياق مختلف، هدف الكاتب هو أن يظل العقل الإنسانى فى حالة تساؤل دائم، لأن الحكمة الحقيقية ليست منتجًا نهائيًا ... الحكمة عملية مستمرة .. والمفاهيم نسبية والمعرفة لا تتوقف .. وفى كل لحظة هناك جديد تحت الشمس على الرغم من القول الراسخ بالتقادم "ووضع اليد" : "لا جديد تحت الشمس".
