أجمع الباحثون على أن الصحافة الأدبية، مصدر أساسي من مصادر الدراسات الأدبية، وتاريخٌ ثرٌ للحركات والاتجاهات الفكرية والأدبية الحديثة والمعاصرة، وأن أيما دراسة أدبية تقام بعيدة عن الصحافة، فستكون دراسة ناقصة، ومن ثم فإن دراسة أدبية تقام بعيدة عن الصحافة، فستكون دراسة ناقصة؛ ومن ثم فإن دراسة الأدب العربي المعاصر في مصادره هذه، من شأنها أن تضع الأيدي على نشأة المذاهب الأدبية، وتطورها في تتابع زمني محكم، أو حسب دورة المجلة.
إن المجلات الأدبية توشك أن تكون الحافظة للتراث الأدبي، والمؤتمنة عليه؛ فالقدر الأقل من هذا النتاج هو الذي جمع في كتاب، أما الكثرة من هذا التراث فقد بقيت مدفونة بين صفحات المجلات التي لا تكاد توجد إلا في دور الكتب الكبرى، ونادراً ما يجدها الباحث كاملة. وتعد مجلة "شهرزاد" التي كانت تصدر بمصر (1929 – 1943) وأسسها محمد حسن نائل المرصفي، من المجلات المهمة التي دعمت القصة القصيرة، وحاولت أن تؤسس لهذا الفن في الأدب العربي الحديث.
ضم التمهيد مبحثين، تحدث الأول عن أصول القصة وروافدها ودوافع انتشارها. وجاء المبحث الثاني عن مجلة "شهرزاد" تعريفاً بالسمات العامة للمنهج والمقاصد والمحتويات.
