يعد هذا الكتاب الأقدم في موضوعه، فمؤلفه أبو البقاء عبد الله بن محمد البدري (847-894 هـ)، يتحدث عن غوطة دمشق يوم كانت جنة الدنيا. عن فاكهتها في زمن كانت فيه أنواع الصنف الواحد من الفاكهة أكثر من أن تحصى، بل إن بعض الأنواع لا يجد له المؤلف اسماً فيقول: مجهول. عن الزائر الذي شبع من الفاكهة التي تطفو على سطح النهر، والفقراء الذين يحملون مكاتلهم على رؤوسهم ويسيرون في دروب الغوطة، فيعودون وهي ممتلئة بالثمر الحلال الذي سقط عليهم.
عن أزهار وثمار كانت متاحة للغني والفقير، كالنيلوفر، والتمر حنه، وقف وانظر، وورد دمشق الجوري. عن فوائد كل نوع من الثمر أو الخضراوات واستعمالاته الطبية كما قررها كبار أطباء ذلك العصر.
يتحدث عن منتزهات دمشق التي لا مثيل لها: الربوة، والجبهة، وبين النهرين، والشرفين، والنيربين، والحواكير. . . عن عادات أهل دمشق في نزهاتهم واحتفالاتهم، وعن أشعارهم بكل موسم وبكل فصل، بل وبكل نوع من الزهر والفاكهة والشجر.
عن أهل دمشق وكيف كانوا يستعدون للشتاء. عن الثلج وتخزينه للصيف. عن قافات دمشق، وعن صناعاتها التي اشتهرت في أرجاء العالم، وسارت بها القوافل. مع كل طرفة ونادرة وحكاية وشعر وفائدة.
