يركز معظم الباحثين في الإبادة الجماعية على القتل الجماعي، لكن لورنس دافيدسون على النقيض منهم، يناقش الإبادة الثقافية وهو يقول إنه عندما تكون معرفة الناس محدودة عن الثقافات خارج مجموعاتهم، فإنهم يكونون غير قادرين على التقييم الدقيق للتهديدات المزعومة من الآخرين من حولهم.
طوال التاريخ، درجت الأغلبية على وضع حل لهذه المخاوف من خلال القتل الجماعي، لكن الصدمة التي أحدثتها المذابح التي وقعت في العصر الحديث تمنع كثيراً من الدول من ممارسة التصفية الجسدية؛ ولأن الأكثريات أصبحت تدرك الضغوطات الخارجية وتعرف أن عليها أن لا تلجأ إلى الإبادة الجماعية؛ فقد اخترات الإبادة الثقافية بصفتها (البديل الأفضل) لتصفية الجسدية.
في كتاب (الإبادة الثقافية) طُبقت هذه النظرية على حالتين سبقت ما يسمى (المحرقة) التي يقال أن اليهود تعرضوا لها أيام الحكم النازي في ألمانيا، وحالتين أعقبتاها: إبادة الهنود الأمريكيين على أيدي المستوطنين الجهلة الذين كانوا ينظرون إلى هؤلاء المواطنين الأصليين على أنهم بدائيون، وكانوا يميلون إلى ترحيلهم من المناطق الحدودية بدلاً من إبادتهم، والحملة على ثقافة اليهود في دول شرق أوروبا الذين كانوا يعيشون في المناطق الخاضعة للنفوذ الروسي، ثم الهجوم الإسرائيلي على الثقافة الفلسطينية، واستحواذ الصين على منطقة التبت.
يناقش المؤلف الآليات التي يمكن استخدامها لمقاومة الإبادة الثقافية، وكذلك القوى الاجتماعية والسياسية المعاصرة المؤثرة التي يجب التغلب عليها
