يُلقي هذا الكتاب الضوء على مسيرة جمعية أهلية ليبية مستقلة، هي جمعية عمر المختار، التي تأسست في القاهرة سنة 1941 وأعيد تأسيسها في ليبيا بعد رحيل الاستعمار الإيطالي سنة 1943، حيث كان إقليماً برقة وطرابلس تحت الإدارة العسكرية البريطانية وإقليم فزان تحت الإدارة الفرنسية، يستعرض الكتاب بعض جوانب تلك المسيرة من خلال وثائق مركز الجمعية في مدينة درنة، كما تركها الأستاذ عبد الله سكته، سكرتيرها العام بين سنتي 1947 و1948.
كانت لجمعية عمر المختار مواقفها الصلبة في العمل من أجل استقلال ليبيا والتشبّث بوحدتها ومقاومة كل أشكال الهيمنة والنفوذ الأجنبي، وحققت نجاحاً كبيراً كتنظيم مستقل منظّم في بلاد انتشر فيها آنذاك الفقر والأمية، ولم تكن تحظى إلا برصيد ضئيل من الخبرة والكفاءات الإدارية الوطنية.
كما تألقت جمعية عمر المختار في ميادين الثقافة والتعليم والمسرح والرياضة التي شكّلت محاور رئيسية لنشاطاتها على التوازي مع نضالها الوطني ونشاطها السياسي المعارض للسلطة القائمة قبيل الاستقلال.
يتناول الكتاب الدور السياسي للجمعية في قضيتي استقلال ليبيا ووحدتها وعلاقاتها بالسيد محمد إدريس السنوسي وبالجبهة الوطنية والإدارة العسكرية البريطانية، ونشاطاتها في مجالات الثقافة والتعليم والمسرح، كما يتضمن عدداً من وثائقها.
