تناول هذا الكتاب مراحل تطور ميكانيكا الكم بدءًا من تحليل الحقائق التجريبية التي تختص بالإشعاع الحراري الكهرومغناطيسي والظاهرة الكهروضوئية وغيرها والتي لا يمكن تفسيرها إلا من خلال افتراض الطبيعة المزدوجة (الموجية الجسمية) للضوء وظهر ذلك في نظرية الكم لبلانك وأينشتين، وتلي ذلك مراحل أخرى تم التعبير عن ميكانيكا الكم فيها بعدة صيغ مختلفة بواسطة هيزنبرج وشرودنجر الذي كان امتدادًا لفرض دي برولي وصيغة أخرى للعالم ديراك الممثلة بالجبر الكمي، كما استحدثت الميكانيكا الكهروديناميكية وميكانيكا الكم اللونية وتم وضع نماذج رياضية للظواهر الفيزيائية لوصفها وتفسيرها. كذلك قد تم في هذا الكتاب انتقاء موضوعات من الفيزياء الميكروسكوبية وتم تفصيلها في ضوء ميكانيكا الكم من بداياته وحتى الجانب المتقدم فيه. وهو صالح كمقرر تدريسي يهتم بالموضوعات الفيزيائية في هذا المجال مع التطرق إلى الجوانب الرياضية الضرورية.
