قدم المؤلف أنس باردوي لكتابه بمقدمة ومما جاء فيها: "... فضحت نفسي، ثم أحببتها، لأني اطلعت على كثير من الجوانب التي كانت مخفية أمام عيوني، كانت ترقد في أزقة معتمة لم يصل إليها حتى تلك اللحظة وهمُ الخدمات من إنارة وطرق معبدة، فكان ذلك يعدُّ في عُرف أهل الآثار اكتشافاً أثرياً ذا قيمة عالية. تحدثت عن نفسي التي بداخلي بعض الأحيان، وأحياناً أخرى تحدثت عن نفسي التي أراها بأم عيني، وأحياناً أخرى تحدثت عن نفسي التي أراها في في عيون الأصدقاء والأعداء والمحبين والحاسدين، عن نفسي التي عشّشت في قلوب أهل الغيرة، وصارت تنخر في قلوبهم كما ينخر السوس، أو تورق في أفئدتهم كما تورق الياسمين…
لم أكتب عن الحب، ولا عن النفس، ولم يكن كتابي اجتماعيّاً ولا إداريّاً، ولم يكن في أي حالٍ كتاباً تحفيزيّاً يشجع القارئ على التحلي بالإيجابية، بل كان خليطاً من كل ذلك، يشم الوردة ويرتاح لعطرها دون قطفها، ويمر على العواصم والمدن، فلا يقتلع منها حجراً، ولا يترك خلفه أثراً، بل يجمع من كل زاوية صورةً تقبع للذكرى، ومذاقاً خالصاً يصلح لطبق معرفة شهي على مائدة المستقبل (...)".
