قطر بلد من بلدان الخليج العربي، وترجع تسميتها بقطر إلى ما قبل الإسلام، حيث كانت تصنع فيها البرود القطرية، وقد توشح بها النبي - صلى الله عليه وسلم -، كما في حديث أنس عن الترمذي أن النبي - صلى الله عليه وسلم - خرج وهو يتكئ على أسامة بن زيد وعليه ثوب قطري قد توشح به فصلى بهم. وسميت بذلك لكثرة نزول القطر بها، كما أشار إلى ذلك ياقوت في معجمه، قال صاحب "المشهور المعلوم من تاريخ قطر المنظوم" :
وسميت قطر من قطرها مطرا وليس للقطري المعروف من قدم
بل إن نسبته منها لمسكنه والدين فيها قويم راسخ القدم
