يأتي كتاب "منية المحبّين وبغية العاشقين" إستجابةً لحاجة المجتمع الّذي عاش فيه كاتبه "مرعي بن يوسف بن يحيى بن مرعي الحنبليّ الكرميّ المقدسيّ المصريّ"، (المتوفى عام 1033هـ، 1623م)، في النصف الثاني من القرن العاشر الهجريّ / السادس عشر الميلاديّ، فقضيّة الحبّ والعشق أمرٌ عامّ بالمطلق، متعلّق بالمجتمعات كلّها دون إستثناء.
وقد استجاب عددٌ من الكتّاب والمؤلّفين في القديم والحديث لحاجات مجتمعاتهم، ووضعوا مصنّفات يمكن أن نسمّيها مؤلّفات مجتمعيّة ضمّنوها مداخلات دينيّة وأدبيّة ومنطقيّة حول الموضوع مدار البحث.
والكرميّ واحد من أولئك الذين سكنهم همّ المجتمع وأرّقتهم شجونه، فانبروا يعالجون قضاياه، ووضع الكتابَ ليأخذ بأيدي الشباب ومن وقع من العامّة والخاصّة في العشق، وهوت قدمه في دروب الهوى ليكون لهم - أي الكتّاب - طوق نجاة يعلّمهم آداب المحبّة، وطرقها الحميدة، ومسالكها اللطيفة.
