لم يصدر رعد عبد القادر خلال حياته القصيرة (1953 ـــــ 2003) الا أربع مجموعات شعرية، وقد ظلّ شبه مجهول عربياً حتى لحظة وفاته، تاركاً وراءه العديد من المخطوطات التي قد لا تبصر النور قريباً. «دار المدى» أصدرت له «عصر التسلية» و«صقر فوق رأسه شمس» في كتاب واحد. وقد بدأ رعد عبد القادر النشر في وقت مبكر، إذ صدر كتابه الشعري الأول «مرايا الاسئلة» عام 1979. ولم تصدر مجموعاته اللاحقة إلا بعدها بزمن طويل، بدءاً من «جوائز السنة الكبيسة» (1995) و«دع البلبل يتعجب» (1996) وصولاً إلى «أوبرا الأميرة الضائعة» (2000). نكتشف في هذه الكتب تحولات رعد عبد القادر شاعراً، وتطور مشاغل الجيل الذي ينتمي إليه: جيل السبعينيات واستجاباته للتحولات السياسية والاجتماعية العنيفة والمضطربة التي شهدها العراق خلال سني حكم البعث، وقد عاش الشاعر حياته في ظلها. من جهة أخرى، يمثل عبد القادر حالةً نموذجيةً لفقدان الأمل وللتجاهل المرائي للسلطة التي أجبرت كثيرين على الصمت أو على البقاء في الظل. هكذا، لم يكن رعد بعيداً عن المؤسسة الثقافية الرسمية، لأنّها الوحيدة التي وفرت له مصدراً للعيش. وعلى رغم ارتداده عليها في تسعينيات القرن المنصرم، بمحاولة فتح مشروع تجاري صغير، سرعان ما عاد اليها، شأن كثيرين في تلك السنين. لكنّ هواه لم يكن معها، هو كان يمارس حياته مثقفاً على صعيد آخر خفي، يميل الى الكتمان ولا يفصح عن توجهاته إلا نادراً. وكان يطور رؤية فردية تجمع بين الاستبطان الصوفي، واستلهام ما هو عابر في التاريخ، وتبسيط القول حد الاقتراب من السذاجة: «الغرباء عادوا، لقد مضى وقت طويل/ ربما عشرة أعوام، أكثر أو أقل/ تذكروا أنّ غربتهم طالت اكثر مما توقعوا/ عندما دخلوا السوق فاجأتهم رائحة الفاكهة والريح».
