لا يمكن لأي باحث في التاريخ أن ينكر أهمية التاريخ الإجتماعي، في أي بحث يسعى إلى الإحاطة والإلمام بكل العناصر المشَكّلة لبناء السيرورة التاريخية، وعن دوره في تشكيل تاريخ شمولي يتخطى المستوى السياسي، ويهدف إلى إعطاء متنفس جديد للكتابات التاريخية لتحريرها من الطابع الرسمي.
وحري بنا أن نشير إلى أن جل الدراسات التاريخية التي اهتمت بالعصر الوسيط، في المغرب الأقصى انصب اهتمامها على معالجة الجانب السياسي بالدرجة الأولى، في حين تمّ غض الطرف عن الإهتمام بالتاريخ الإجتماعي للمنطقة.
وتتجلى أهمية دراسة الجانب الإجتماعي لحواضر المغرب الأقصى، وخاصة فاس ومراكش في كون هاتين المدينتين عرفتا خلال العصر الوسيط تحولات عميقة، ومنعطفات حاسمة في تاريخهما السياسي، انعكست إيجاباً على دينامية التطور الإجتماعي بينهما.
هذا وإن بحثنا الذي أنجزناه سيصب إهتمامه، ويقصر همّته في دراسة جوانب من الحياة الإجتماعية للحاضرتين فاس ومراكش خلال العصر الوسيط.
