ويمكن―إلى حد معين―إدراج قوة التأثير الأصيل لجويس بشكل محصن في إطار جرأته الفنية. فهو بقلب الفروض المتسقة لمعظم الروايات السابقة، وتجربة الأساليب الهجينة، والنقلات الفجائية، قد أتاح إمكاناتٍ طفق الكتاب الآخرون يستغلونها منذ ذياك الوقت. غير أن الفنان العظيم هو أكثر من مجرد محصلة أساليبه الفنية. وتكمن خلف ملاحظات النقاد من أمثال إليوت وولسون اعتبارات تفوق النطاق الأدبي إلى حد كبير. إن رواية "يوليسيس" هي عند إليوت تحدد الانهيار الأخير (الذي عجلت به دون شك الحرب العالمية الأولى) لنظام اجتماعي يمكن أن يتوحَّد به الفنان بشكل له مغزاه.
