لعبت الحاسبات بجميع أنواعها دوراً هاماً في عالم الصناعة، فالمزايا المفيدة التي تقدمها في مجال التحكم والمراقبة والأتمتة جعلت منها جزءاً هاماً لا غنى عنه في أية منظومة حديثة.
وعلى الرغم من أن حاسبات IBM الشخصية (والمتوافقة معها) ليست مخصصة لهذا المجال إلا أن تطورها المذهل وأداءها المثير وانتشارها الواسع جعل منها خياراً مثالياً ومنافساً قوياً في قيادة مثل هذه المنظومات. فمع تطور ممرات (buses) الحاسبات الشخصية والتزام المصنعين بالمقاييس التي فرضتها بنى تلك الممرات أصبح في وسع المصمم ربط الحاسب الشخصي مع أي جهاز خارجي عن طريق تيمي بطاقة ملاءمة (adapter) تركب على فتحة الممر التوسعية (expansion slot). ومن هنا تأتي أهمية هذا الكتاب الذي يعتبر دليلاً مرجعياً عن تصميم بطاقات الملاءمة.
تجدر الإشارة إلى أن الكتاب لا يمثل دليلاً لبناء أنظمة التحكم أو المراقبة وإنما دليلاً لكيفية الربط واستثمار ممر الحاسب الشخصي. ّ
يعني الكتاب بدراسة الممرات PC AT وPC XT وPC (الذي دعي لاحقاً بالممر ISA) بالتفصيل، حيث تعتبر دراسة الممر ISA أساس دراسة معظم الممرات. كما يحوي الكتاب مقدمة عامة عن الممرين PCI وMCA.
تتميز معظم دارات الكتاب بأنها تشبه أحجار البناء، إذ من السهولة بمكان ربطها وتجميعها، كما يتمتع الكتاب بسهولته وشموليته، والجدير بالذكر أن مؤلف الكتاب كان رئيس فريق مصممي الحاسب الشخصي الأول IBM PC (وهو أيضاً صاحب دور كبير في تطوير تقنية ISDN الخاصة بشبكات الحاسبات) فمعظم الكتب التي تتطرق لهذا الموضوع تعتمد على هذا الكتاب كمرجع وعلى ما ورد فيه من معلومات.
مرجع يتصف بالشمولية والسهولة ويكشف أحد أهم أسرار تكنولوجيا الحاسب المعاصرة، إذ يقدم المعلومات اللازمة لتصميم بطاقات الملاءمة على الممرات MCA و PCI، ككيفية استخدام وتكييف نظام المقاطعة ونظام DMA و غيرها في لوحة نظام الحاسب، كما يسلط الضوء على ربط عناصر التحكم كالمفاتيح والحاكمات ومحركات الخطوة والمظهرات والعناصر والترياكات والمحولات ADC وDCA، إضافة إلى عدة تصاميم جاهزة كبطاقة ذكية لمراقبة عمل الممر.
