حين تعلّم نزول الدرج وحده، صار فرجة نسوة البناية، يمرّرن باطن أياديهنّ على شعره المجعّد، يطعمنه حزوز الليمون أو يدعونه ليأكل كؤوس المهلّبية أو الأرزّ بحليب في غرف جلوسهنّ. قيل إنّ النسوة الحبالى يتفرّجن عليه للوحام.
ألبسته عليا الدائزلي تحويطة. "بتردّ العين يا عيّوش. اللّه وكيلك نسوان عيونها بتقوّص قواص. قريضة اللي تقرضن وحدة تقول للتانية".
تحكي بفم مفتوح كمندهشة. خلعت الأسود بعد شهرين فقط من مقتل زوجها. ورمت كلّ ثيابه في ليلة كاحلة. قالت إنّها لن تكون أرملة حزينة. يليق بها الحبّ. صارت ترتدي فساتين قصيرة من دون أكمام تبرز مفاتن جسمها الذي لم تعطبه واجبات الحمل والرضاعة.
قالوا إنّ نبيل ورث جماله عن أمّه التي لم يروها يوماً لكنّهم سمعوا عنها. – نسوان النصارى جميلات. تصحّح أخرى همساً: – أمّو يهودية. تضع إصبعاً على فمها، كأنّها تريد ابتلاع كلامها الذي سقط سهواً.
