نقدم قصتين للكاتب د. هـ. لورنس (1885ـ1930)، القصة الأولى هي "العذراء والغجري" وفي هذه القصة تتمثل إلي حد بعيد نزعة لورنس إلي نصرة الطبيعة على مجتمع التقاليد العفن.
يتمثل في انهيار السد المقام على نهر بابل وفيضانه ليكتسح كل شيء، فيتقوض مبنى الأبرشية الذي كان صرحًا للتقاليد.
ويلتئم شمل العاشقين، بطلي القصة: الغجري الطريد والعذراء إيفيت ابنة القس الصغيرة بعد أن فرقت بينهما القيود الإجتماعية.
أما قصة "المرأة التي جمحت" فهي قصة امرأة عصرية استجابت لنداء الطبيعة الغامض فهجرت زوجها وأولادها إلى حيث مجتمع الهنود حيث قدموها قرباناً للآلهة بغية استرضائها، فتنحاز إليهم وتعيد إلي مجتمعهم الأصيل سابق قوته متخلية عن الرجل الأبيض ومجتمعه الصناعي الزائف.
