في القصة المعنونة "دول" نقرأ:
"كندا... أوروبا الشرقية... جزء من العالم العربي... بعض دول آسيا... ضفدع صغير ونقار الخشب... عدة عصافير وفيل، اعترضوا طريقها ذات مساء، وتعتقد أنهم كانوا أكثر لولا أن صوتاً ثملاً شتت انتباهها عندما صاح: يا للشباب! يتأملون ظل شجرة في طقس بارد كهذا! أنتم مرضى! اذهبوا إلى بيوتكم!
أكملت سيرها تاركة وراءها الجميع بمن فيهم الرجل الثمل الذي ربما لن يعرف أنها ليست شابة وأنه لا مأوى لديها سوى الظلال".
