نشرت هذه الرواية في العام 1937، بالاسم المستعار "موراي قسطنطين إلا أنه لم يكشف إلا في العام 1980 عن اسم الكاتبة الحقيقي كاثرين بوردكين التي توفيت في العام 1963. والفائدة الرئيسية من هذا العمل الأدبي العظيم أن بوردكين كانت تحكي قصة مستقبلية عن أوروبا التي ستتشكل بعد سبعة قرون من تحقيق هتلر والنازية نصرهما الكامل. فتبدأ الرواية مع أحد الفرسان حيث يدخل "كنيسة هتلر المقدسة"، بينما ينشد المؤمنون الغناء بحمده ويسمونه إله الرعد. تصور الرواية هذا القدر الكابوسي على كل أوربا لو أن النازية قد انتصرت بالرغم من أنها، أي هذه الرواية كتبت قبل عامين من غزو هتلر لبولونيا، وقبل نشوب الحرب العالمية الثانية أيضا. ومن الواضح أن بوردكين كانت تتنبأ بما ستئول إليه سياسات هتلر وإيديولوجيته. والتحذير من مخاطر الفكر النازي. ومن اللافت أن هذا الكتاب قد اختير في العام 1940 من قبل مجموعة من اليساريين، بوصفه رواية مستوحاة من نقد فكرة هتلر النازية بخلق رايخ الألف عام. وقد وصفها المؤرخ الأدبي آندي كروفت، بأنها أكثر الروايات المناهضة للفاشية أصالة. وتعبيرا عن الواقع المرير. فبطل الرواية ألفريد، وهو انكليزي يعمل ميكانيكيا يقوم بحج مقدس إلى ألمانيا، ورؤية المواقع الهتلرية، بعد أن تتحول النازية إلى ما يشبه الدين الذي يحكم العالم.
