ظللت أسمع خبطاً خفيفاً إلى جانبي، وأنا قانع بخط سيري، في هواء الفجر الرطب أملت نظري قليلاً إلى يساري، وجدتُ أحدهم، على بعد خطوة واحدة فقط، يضرب الأرض ولا يأبه، وكأنه سقط فجأة من طابق قريب. قلت في سرّي: هذا إذن. إنه قربي يكاد يلتصق بي، تكاد كتفه تمسح كتفي. كيف؟ في هذه اللحظة، وعلى الشارع نفسه؟ لم يلتفت نحوي. عشرون خطوة، خمس وعشرون، ولا يبدو أنه قد يلتفت. كانت الرياح هدأت، والصفيرُ تلاشى كأنما انطوى داخل الشقوق المتناهية، إلى جانبي الطريق.
