لقد كانت الدولة السلوقية (312-64 ق.م) أكبر دولة هلنستية عرفها الشرقان، الأدنى والأوسط. وكانت قد قامت أثر انهيار امبراطورية الاسكندر المقدوني. ومؤسسها هو، سلوقس الأول نيكاتور، وقد حملت اسم سلالة السلوقيين الحاكمة. وكانوا يسمونها أحياناً (بالمملكة السورية) نسبة الى القسم الأعظم من الأراضي التي امتدت سلطتها عليها.
وهذا الكتاب يعطي صورة واضحة عن بنية الدولة السلوقية وأقسامها الادارية والعسكرية، ووحداتها الاقتصادية. كما يرسم صورة مقبولة عن حياة القصر الملكي وطريقة الحكم، وعن حياة الفئات الاجتماعية الأخرى. إنه تاريخ مرحلة هامة من تاريخ بلادنا هي، المرحلة التي أطلق المؤرخون عليها اسم، العصر الهلنستي، وهي التسمية التي يرفضها بعضهم دون أن يقدم، حتى الآن، مبرراً علمياً مقبولاً. في هذا العصر الهلنستي تأسست على أراضي بلادنا مدن تاريخية هامة ومعروفة، منها: دورايوروبوس، أفاميا، أديسا، لاوديكا، أنطاكيا، سلوفيا وغيرها.
