بين طيات هذا الكتاب مساجلة علمية مفيدة جرت في القرن السابع الهجري بين الإمامين العالمين الكبيرين: العز بن عبد السلام، وأبي عمرو بن الصلاح، وسبب هذه المساجلة هو أنه لما تولى العز بن عبد السلام الخطابة والإمامة في جامع دمشق الأموي، أزال كثيراً من البدع التي كان الخطباء يفعلونها أو يقوم بها العامة، ومما أبطله ومنع منه صلاة الرغائب، وخطب في شهر رجب سنة 637هـ، فبين أنها بدعة منكرة.
ويظهر أن ابن صلاح وعالماً آخر، لم يريا رأيه في المنع وأفتيا بخلافه، فألف رسالته: "الترغيب عن صلاة الرغائب الموضوعة وبيان ما فيها من مخالفة السنن المشروعة". لبيان الحق في هذا المر وقال فيها: "بلغني أن رجلين ممن تصدى للفتيا مع بعدهما عنها سعياً في تقرير هذه الصلاة وأفنيا بتحسينها"، يعني بذلك ابن الصلاح...
ورد ابن الصلاح على رسالة العز برسالة عنوانها: "الرد على الترغيب عن صلاة الرغائب الموضوعة، وبيان ما فيها من مخالفة السنن المشروعة". فعاد العز ومنذ الرد... مما ستقرؤه في هذه الصفحات فترى فيه صورة للحياة العلمية والعقلية في القرن السابع، وشاهداً على ما كان يتمتع به العلماء الغابرون من غيرة على الدين، وحفاظ عليه، ورغبة في إحاطته من كل ما ينتقص منه، أو يشوبه من البدع، وجرأة في تقرير السنة، وتزييف البدعة، وبيان الحق بالدليل الشرعي، والمنطق العلمي.
