عاش عمر الخيام في بلاد فارس في أواخر عهد الدولة العباسية، والتي لم يبقى لها سوى سلطة الأسمية، حيث كانت السلطة الفعلية بيد ملوك السلاجقة، الذين شجعوا الآداب والعلوم فتحولت قصورهم إلى مراكز أدبية وعلمية مشعة.
إن عمر الخيام هو نتاج إلتقاء الحضارة العربية الإسلامية والتراث الفارسي العريق، ومن هنا جاء الإهتمام الكبير عربياً بل وعالمياً بترجمة تراث هذا الشاعر والعالم الكبير.
امتاز شعر عمر الخيام بأفكاره الفلسفية العميقة بحيث امتزج فيها العشق للمحبوبة بعشق الكون وخالقه، حتى أن يحتار القارئ في شعر الخيام؛ هل الخمرة التي يقصدها هي خمرة العنب أم خمرة روحية صرفة؟...
كان الخيام إلى ذلك عالم فلك مرموق، وقد رفض العيش في القصور ومدح الأمراء، واقتصر في شعره على الموضوعات الفكرية والفلسفية التي كانت تجيش في نفسه.
في هذا الكتاب الممتع يتعرف القارئ على سيرة حياة عمر الخيام كما ويتعرف إلى بعض القصص والأساطير المثيرة التي رويت عنه وصديقيه حسن الصباح زعيم الفدائية والوزير نظام الملك.
كما يتضمن الكتاب التعريف بأبرز ترجمات رباعيات الخيام إلى اللغة العربية مع إظهار نقاط القوة والضعف بها، وفي الختام تم تقديم أهم ترجمتين للرباعيات وهي ترجمة أحمد رامي والتي امتازت بلغتها الغنائية المميزة مما حدا بكوكب الشرق السيدة أم كلثوم أن تغني مختارات منها، وترجمة أحمد صافي النجفي والتي عدت أدق ترجمة من الترجمات المتاحة للرباعيات.
