في عام 1900 أعيد الإعتبار لبحوث مندل في الوراثة والتي تجلت فيها عبقريته من خلال ما أرسى من قواعد علم الوراثة، وبعد حوالي قرن من الزمان اتسعت معرفتنا وتعمقت نظرتنا وتكشف لنا من أسرار الله في خلقه ما لم يتجلى للأجيال السابقة فبدأنا ندرك بميز أدق وبصيرة أعمق بعد أن شاهدنا الخلية الحجر الأساس في الأحياء وعرفنا الصبغيات ومن ثم المورثات (الجينات) بمثابة المخطات اللازمة لتكوين الصفات ومن ثم كشفنا عن خصائص المواد الحاسمة في الحياة على هيئة حلز الدنا DNA الذي يؤلف جوهر الجينات وأسفر البحث الحثيث في علم الحياة الجزيئي عن سجل لجميع المعلومات في الإنسان من خلال مشروع مجين الإنسان Human Genome Project والمئات من الجراثيم والروائح وبعض النباتات خصوصاً المهمة إقتصادياً.
مسار رائع قلما نجد له مثيلاً في أي من العلوم الأخرى وحالة تدعو إلى الفخر والثقة بقدرات العقل البشري إن توفرت له الظروف المناسبة، لكن الأمر بقدر ما يدعو إلى الإعجاب والإعتزاز يفرض علينا التأمل ملياً فيما يعني هذا القدر من المعرفة وما تضعه من إمكانيات بأيدي صانيعها، وأقل ما نستطيع فعله هو أن نعي ما يدور من حولنا من تقدم متسارع الخطى ونأمل أن يكون لشبابنا إسهام فيه.
وحسبي أن يجعل هذا الكتاب الموجز مفاهيم علم الوراثة شيئاً ميسوراً لطلابنا الأعزاء وأن يتبينوا من خلاله المنطق الذي أسس عليه علم الوراثة ليلج من يقدر منهم إلى أعماقه ويتبصروا آفاقه، فقد سبقتنا الأمم، والعلم خير مطلب ومكسب.
