مؤلف هذا الكتاب هو العلامة محمد سعيد بن عبد الله السويدي العباسي البغدادي، أحد علماء بغداد في القرن الثاني عشرة للهجرة (18م) أرّخ فيه بدقة حوادث النصف الأخير من القرن المذكور، لا سيما ما يتعلق بصعود المماليك إلى سدة السلطة في بغداد، والصراعات التي نشبت بين زعمائهم، وموقف الدولة العثمانية، والشعب منهم، وصحيح أن عدداً من المؤرخين قد تناول هذه الحوادث في كتاباتهم، إلا أن ما يميز هذا ا لكتاب أن مؤلفته كتبه وهو بعيد عن وطنه، مما مكنه من أن يعبر عن رأيه في شخوص الحوادث التي كتب عنها بصدق نادر، لم يكن ليحصل لو أنه كتبه في كنف بعض ولاته أو أتباعهم، كما أنه كتب لدوافع علمية بحتة، بتشجيع من مؤرخ دمشق الشهير محمد خليل المرادي، فلا مصلحة له مطلقاً فيما كتبه عن أولئك الشخوص، ولا خوف عليه أو حرج إن ذكر من الحقائق ما أساء إليهم.
والكتاب يعد هذا يعتمد شهادة عيان مؤلفه، فهو لم يسجل غير الحوادث التي رآها بعينه، أو كان لصيقاً بمجرياتها، فلم يعتمد على روايات نقلها إليه آخرون، مهما كانوا، بل لم يتأثر بوجهات نظرهم لأنه لم يلتق بهم أصلاً في أثناء كتابته لتاريخه، إتباعاً لتوجيه صديقه المؤرخ الدمشقي.
