في عام 1945 شهدت البشرية كارثة ما زالت آثارها موجودة حتى الآن، تجلت هذه الكارثة بقيام الولايات المتحدة الأميريكية بإلقاء قنبلة نووية على مدينة هيروشيما اليابانية أدت إلى دمار المدينة بأكملها ومقتل معظم سكانها، إلا أن الكارثة لم تنته عند هذا الحد فقد تركت الإشعاعات النووية آثارها في دم من تبقى من سكان هيروشيما، وفعلت هذه الآثار فعلها بأن إنتقلت إلى الأبناء وأدت إلى إصابتهم بأنواع عدة من السرطانات التي أودت في النهاية بحياتهم. تلك هي مأساة هيروشيما وشعبها، وتلك هي مأساة ساداكو الطفلة اليابانية التي نهش سرطان الدم روحها وجسدها وسلبها حياتها، طفلة لا ذنب لها دفعت ثمناً لبشاعة حرب لم ترحم أحداً. إلا أن ساداكو ومن خلال حبها لطائر الكراكي، ومن خلال حب زملائها وزميلاتها في الدراسة الذين صنعوا لها المئات منها من الورق أثناء فترة معاناتها من مرض سرطان الدم، تحولت هي وذلك الطائر إلى رمز للحب والعطاء وجمال الحياة. لقد جسدت بموتها علامة للبشرية ودعوة للسلام ونبذ الحروب، وما زال طائر الكراكي يطير وما زال يحمل رسالتها عبر الحياة وإلى كل البشر. تحية حب لساداكو وللكراكي وللسلام نقدمها من خلال هذه الترجمة للقصة التي كتبتها إلينا كوير.
