أنه كانت بين المصنّف وبين أبي أسامة جُنادة اللغوي وأبي علي المقرئ الأنطاكي مودّة أكيدة، وإجتماع في دار الكتب ومذكرات، فلما قتلهما الحاكم صاحبُ مصر، استتر بسبب ذلك "الحافظ عبد الغني" خوفاً أن يلحق بهما، لإتّهامه بمعاشرتهما، وأقام مستخفياً مدّة، حتى حصل له الأمن، فظهر، والظّاهر أنه داراهم بعد ذلك.
فكأن المصنِّف اعتذر من إختفائه وتواريه، فكتب كتابه الممتع هذا، فذكر بسنده العلماء الذين اختفوا من "الحجاج بن يوسف".
