الكسوف المقصود بهذا ليس كسوف البشر الذى نفتقده بشدة الآن وإنما المقصود كسوف الشمس والكسوف الكلى حدث نادر تتوارى فيه الشمس تماماً عن الرؤية لوقوع القمر بينها وبين الأرض على خط واحد وبمسافات معينة يكون القمر ظاهراً أكبر من الشمس.
تستخدم اللغة العربية لفظين مختلفين لوصف إختفاء ضوء الشمس والقمر فإختفاء الشمس "كسوف" وإختفاء القمر "خسوف" والعربية هكذا أدق من الإنجليزية التى تستخدم لفظاً واحداً لوصف الحالتين هو Eclipse وهى كلمة تعنى اصلاً دخول جرم سماوى فى ظل جرم آخر والمصطلح الإنجليزى هكذا صحيح بالنسبة لكسوف الشمس لأنها لا تدخل على الكسوف فى ظل القمر وإنما هى تتوارى وتحتجب بسبب مرور القمر بينها وبين الأرض وهذا فيه لبس نتجنبه تماماً فى العربية باستخدام كلمتين كل حالة وهذه دقة تحسب لنا ثقافياً وحضارياً هذا بخلاف أننا نستخدم كلمة خسوف للمذكر وكلمة للمؤنث فنقول خسوف القمر وكسوف الشمس.
