فى مطلع القرن التاسع عشر الميلادى تمكن جان -فرانسلوا شامبليون (1832-1790) من فك رموز الحروف الهيروغليفية التى كتبت بها اللغة المصرية القديمة، وانطلقت وثائق البردى فى مصر، وجدران معابدها، ولوحات مقابرها تكشف عن حضارة عظيمة تختلف صورتها عن تلك الصورة المظلمة التى ترسمها لها نصوص اليهود فيما سموه العهد القديم.
توالت الحفريات فى الشام وفلسطين والعراق وبخاصة فى أو غاريت Ougarit، ونوزى Nouzi، وأورUr، وغيرها، ووقع الصدام بين ما كشفه علم الآثار من حقائق وما جاء فى الأسفار اليهودية من أساطير، وخرافات، وانقسم العلماء فى هذه القضية أربعة أقسام:
فريق منهم يكذب الأسفار، ويرفض جميع ما جاء فيها مخالفا العلم وأكثر علماء هذا الفريق من الملحدين والعلمانيين ومن اقتدى بهم.
وفريق منهم ينكر على الحديث اقتحام هذا الحرم المقدس مؤمناً بصدق النص الدينى وإن خالف العقيدة الصحيحة والفطرة السليمة، وإن كذبه التاريخ، وإن تأكد لديه بما لا يقبل الشك زيف النص، وغموضه والجهل بقائله، وأغلب هذا الفريق من علماء اللاهوت المسيحى.
وفريق منهم يحاول تأويل النصوص الدينية، وتطويعها للتوفيق بينها وبين حقائق التاريخ، ويزيل ما بينهما من تناقض. وقد دأب على أن يحمل النصوص فوق ما تحتمل.
والفريق الرابع، وهم قليل من العلماء الذين بحثوا القضية بحياد تام محاولين كشف الحقيقة، ونفى الأوهام، وأشهر علماء هذا الفريق اثنان: العالم العراقى الدكتور أحمد سوسة -رحمه الله-، والمؤرخ الفرنسى جى راشيه.
