إن خير تقديم لكتاب "الكامل للمبرد" ماوصفه صاحبه في تقديمه له حيث يقول: (هذا كتاب ألفناه، يجمع ضروباص من الآداب بين كلام منثور وشعر مرصوف، ومثل سائر، وموعظة بالغة، واختيار من خطبة شريفة ورسالة بليغة، والنية أن نفسر كل ما وقع في هذا الكتاب من كلام غريب، وأن نشرح ما يعرض فيه من الإعراب شرحاً وافياً، حتى يكون الكتاب بنفسه مكتفياً)، وهذا الكتاب يضم مادة غزيرة مختلفة تقع على الكثير من الأدب واللغة والتاريخ والنحو، والقارئ له لايحس مللاً؛ لأنه لا يقرأ أدباً متصلاً ولا لغة متصلةً ولا نحواً متصلاً، ولقد كان ابن خلدون محقاً حين قال: "سمعنا من شيوخنا في مجالس العلم أن أصول هذا الفن وأركانه أربعة دواوين وهي: الكامل للمبرد، وأدب الكاتب لابن قتيبية، والبيان والتبيين للجاحظ، وكتاب النوادر لأبي علي القالي، وما سوى هذه الأربع فتبعٌ لها وفروع منها.
