على الرغم من مرور أكثر من ألف عام على وضع الطبيب العربي أبي بكر محمد بن زكريا الرازي (865-925م) كتاب (ما الفارق أو الفروق أو كلام في الفروق بين الأمراض". لا يزال هذا الكتاب يحتل أهمية بالغة في التشخيص التفريقي للأمراض أو ما يسمى (التشخيص المقارن) حيث يعد أول كتاب في الطب خصص في هذا العلم موجه إلى الأطباء الممارسين. لذلك فهو كتاب مختصر انتقى مؤلفه حالات خاصة دقيقة من كل فصل من فصول الأمراض من الرأس حتى القدم. حالات تشتبه الأمراض بعضها بعضاً ويقول في ذلك "قد تختفي الحقيقتان عن الحس وتشتبه أعراضهما ويحتاج إلى التفرقة بينهما كما في ذات الجنب وذات الرئة، سواء اشتبهت الحقيقتان في أنفسهما أو لم تشتبه فهذا ما أردنا تمهيده في الفرق ... لأن الأحوال التي اقتصرنا عليها إنما هي المشتبهة فقط ..." ويضيف الرازي: "ليس هذا الكتاب لمعرفة الأسباب والأعراض بل لمعرفة الفروق بين الخفي منها، وبين الأمراض ونحن إذا نبهنا على الفرق فعليك أنت بمعرفة السبب والمرض ...". وبناءً على ما تقدم يكتسب الكتاب أهميته على مقدار ما وصل إليه الرازي من البراعة، والدقة في التشخيص السريري، والمستوى الرفيع الذي وصل إليه من حيث التعليم والشرح فضلاً عن كونه يعين الأطباء الممارسين للمهنة على معرفة ما وصفه القدماء من أمراض ومقارنتها بالتسميات والتصانيف الحديثة. ولأهمية هذا الكتاب عمل على تحقيقه وشرحه الدكتور سليمان قطاية من جامعة حلب بالإستناد إلى ثلاث مخطوطات تشرح خمسة مقالات، صُنّفت فيها الأمراض، حسب العادة المتبعة في ذلك الزمان: من الرأس إلى القدم.
المقالة الأولى مؤلفة من خمسة فصول تتناول فروق بين أمراض تقع في الرأس.
المقالة الثانية مؤلفة من: ثلاثة فصول وتتناول فروق بين أمراض الطرق التنفسية.
المقالة الثالثة مؤلفة من: أربعة فصول تبحث في الفروق بين أمراض المعدة والكبد والطحال والكلى والمثانة وأعضاء التناسل.
المقالة الرابعة مؤلفة من: ثلاثة فصول تبحث في أمراض وأحوال البدن كله كالحميات والقروح والأورام.
المقالة الخامسة مؤلفة من فصلين وتبحث في بعض أقسام النبض والبول المتشابهة ...
