صدرت أربع طبقات- ولله الحمد- من هذا الكتاب، وهو الكتاب الذي احببته وعشت معه برهة من الزمان، فعلمني سيرة السلف، وأرشدني لفضلهم، ودلني على جوانب عظيمة من حياتهم: جهادهم، وحبهم لدينهم، وبذلهم المهج والنفائس من أجله، وحرصهم على العلم، ورغبتهم فيه. ومما لفت نظري في سيرتهم: سهولة حياتهم، وعدم تكلفهم، وجريان أمورهم وشؤونهم بيسر ومعونة إلهية.
هذا وقد احتوى هذا الكتاب على زيادة مهمة. ألا وهي سير الخلفاء الأربعة الراشدين، التي قد خلا منها كتاب "السير" فعمدت إلى قسم الخلفاء الراشدين من كتاب "تاريخ الإسلام" للذهبي، فاختصرته وضممته إلى هذا الكتاب؛ ليكون حاوياً لأفضل أمة النبي "صلى الله عليه وسلم" وهم أصحابه وخلفاؤه الراشدون، وأدمجت فهارسه مع فهرست الفوائد العام.
