من المؤكد أن عائلة " بابان " لعبت دوراً بارزاً في تاريخ جنوب كردستان، بصورة خاصة، وفي ما يسمى اليوم " العراق " بصورة عامة، وساهموا، مع غيرهم، في أن يكون له شأناً إقليمياً إسوة بالدور التاريخي الذي كانت تلعبه الدول المجاورة له، أي كل من تركيا وبلاد فارس. هذا الدور إبتدأ من أوائل القرن السادس عشر وإمتد حتى الرابع عشر من تموز ألف وتسعمائة وثمانية وخمسون، أي تاريخ الإنقلاب الذي حصل وأطاح بالعهد الملكي. كثيرون من الأمراء والشخصيات، من هذه العائلة، كان لهم تأثير كبير في صنع السياسة الإقليمية والتأثير الإقتصادي على المنطقة ككل. خلال العقود الاخيرة، من القرن الماضي، حاول بعض أفراد هذه العائلة جمع معلومات تاريخية عنها ووضعها في شجرة موضحة أصولها وفروعها. ولعل من أهم الأشخاص الذين قاموا بهذا العمل كان جلال الدين رستم لامع بابان حيث إستندنا إلى مخطوطاته بقدر كبير في جمع هذه الوثيقة.
