ظلّ العلويون من أكثر الأقليات الدينية تعرضاً للاضطهاد في الشرق الأوسط لمئات السنين، ولذلك كان صعود رجل عَلَوي اسمه حافظ الأسد، واستلامه منصب رئيس الجمهورية العربية السورية سنة 1971 إنجازاً هاماً. شكّلت الطائفة العَلَوية السورية قاعدةً شعبية أساسية اعتمد عليها حافظ الأسد في دعم الحكم الذي وَرِثَه ابنه بشار من بعده سنة 2000. وبسبب هذا الدعم أُطلقت على العَلَويين صفة الطائفة "المُسَيطرِة" أو "الحاكِمة" في سورية. رغم أنّ هذه الصفات لا تنطبق على ظروف حياة كثيرٍ منَ العَلَويين السوريين، التي ظلّت متخلفةً اجتماعياً واقتصادياً، بل وخضعوا لكثير من الضغط لكبتِ معتقداتهم الدينية خلال حكم الأسد. فلماذا استمر العَلَويون في دعم حكم عائلة الأسد؟
باستخدام منهج الاستقراء المنطقي النوعي الذي استند إلى العمل الواقعي في الميدان، وإلى المقابلات، وتحليل المصادر المباشرة وغير المباشرة، دَرَسَ ليون ت. غولدسميث من جامعة أوتاغو في نيوزيلندا في كتابه المعنون «دائرة الخوف.. العَلَويون السوريون في الحرب والسلم» دَرَسَ تطور وطبيعة السياسة العَلَوية. كما استُخدم مبدأ ابن خلدون في "العصبية" (شعور الجماعة) كإطارٍ عامٍ في دراسة العوامل الأساسية التي يمكن أن تُفسِّر دعم العَلَويين لحكم عائلة الأسد.
تستنتج هذه الدراسة أن خوف الطائفة هو العامل الأساسي في السياسة التي اتبعها العَلَويون في استمرار دعمهم لحكم عائلة الأسد. لم يَذكر ابن خلدون هذا العامل في نظريته عن صعود وانهيار الأسر الحاكمة. وفي النهاية تُبيّن حالة العَلَويين السوريين آثار سياسة "الخوف الطائفي وعدم الاطمئنان" التي قد تتبعها الأقليات، والتي يمكن أن تُعيق ظهور التعددية السياسية الحقيقية في الشرق الأوسط.
