هذا الكتاب تاريخ مهم لحكم بني أيوب في اليمن وبعض السلاطين الأوائل لنبي رسول هناك، ومن المعلوم أنه في سنة 569/1173 توجَّه إلى اليمن توران شاه ابن أيوب - أخو صلاح الدين الأيوبي المشهور، واستولى عليها، وبذلك دخلت تلك البلاد في حوزة بني أيوب.
وبعد مضي 46 سنة (في سنة 628/ 1229) استناب الملك المسعود - وهو آخر بني أيوب في اليمن - عمر بن علي الرسولي ليكون نائباً في اليمن لدولة بني أيوب، ولكن أحداً من الأيوبيين لم يعد إلى تلك البلاد، ويستعيد حكمها، وفي سنة 632/ 1235 اتخذ عمر بن علي لقب "الملك المنصور" مؤسساً بذلك دولة بني رسول ومعلناً إستقلالها عن بني أيوب، وفي سنة 694/ 1295 توفي السلطان الثاني لبني رسول - وهو الملك المظفر يوسف، وبوفاته ينتهي كتاب (السمط) إذ يتوقف المؤلف عند ذلك التاريخ.
أما فيما يتعلق بالمؤلف، فإن المعلومات الموجودة في (السمط) تساعد على إستجلاء بعض جوانب حياته، حيث كان الأمر بدر الدين محمد بن حاتم من بني حاتم الذين كانوا يحكمون صنعاء في وقت دخول بني أيوب لليمن، وكان بنو حاتم من يام من همدان، وكانوا من الإسماعيلية، ولكن ذلك لم يكن حائلاً دون إنخراط محمد ابن حاتم في سلك خدمة بني رسول، وهم من السنيين، وتدرجه في الوظيفة صار أميراً من أمراء الدولة في أيام الملك المظفر يوسف السلطان الثاني من بني رسول.
ومن المؤكد أن المؤلف صنَّف كتابه في مدة تنتهي في شهر رمضان من سنة 694/1295 كما يتضح من قوله: "فهما ملكانا هذا الأوان"، وبهما إستقامة الزمان"، لأن الملك المظفر في شهر جمادى الأولى من تلك السنة قد سلم لإبنه الملك االأشرف عمر حكم البلاد، وتوفي المظفر في شهر رمضان، وهذا دليل واضح على أن تصنيف الكتاب قد تمَّ في السنة المذكورة.
