إصطلاح الفلسفة اليهودية كإصطلاح الفلسفة الإغريقية أو الإسلامية، يعنى أن لليهود فلسفة وفلاسفة. والفليسوف اليهودى هى الذى يصدر عن اليهودية كعقيدة، غير أن هناك فلاسفة من اليهود تبدو فلسيفاتهم كفلسفات الأمم، وهؤلاء لم أتناولهم فى هذه الموسوعة، وإن كان يصدق عليهم قول إسحق دويتسر (1907 - 1967) أن "اليهودى يظل يهودياً ولإن إرتكب خطيئة" (محاضرة فى المؤتمر اليهودى لعام 1958 خلال أسبوع الكتاب اليهودى)، ويقصد بذلك أن الفليسوف اليهودى يظل يهودياً فى تفكيره وإن لم يكتب فى اليهودية، أو أنه رغم ما يبدو من أممية فلسفته يظل يهودياً جداً على نحو ما، أويظل فيه شئ من جوهر الحياة اليهودية والفكر اليهودى، فعندما يدرك الفليسوف اليهودى، كاسبينوزا، النتاقض بين الإله الواحد والكون، أويدرك الوضع الذى يظهر عليه ذلك الإله الواحد فى الديانة اليهودية كأنه مرتبط بشعب واحد، وما يحمله من تناقض بين الإله كإله كونى وبينه كإله لشعب خاص، فإنه يتجاوز اليهودية إلى الإنسانية، وتظل جذوره مع ذلك مشدودة إلى التراث اليهودى، وهكذا كان أسبينوزا، فلم تكن أخلاقه هى الأخاق اليهودية وإنما كانت هى أخلاق الإنسان بعامة، ولم يكن إله هو الإلهة اليهودى، ولكنة كان الإله الكونى، ومع ذلك ظل إله اسبينوزا وأخلاقة يهوديين بشكل ما.
