إن القاضي عياضاً ألف كتابه: "الشفا بتعريف حقوق المصطفى" جمع فيه شذرة من فضائل النبي (صلى الله عليه وسلم) وشمائله، وحقوقه على أمته، فوقع من أهل العلم موقع الإستحسان والإنفاس، تناول في باب حكم الصلاة عليه والتسليم مسألة حكم الصلاة على النبي (صلى الله عليه وسلم) في التشهد الأخير من الصلاة، فعرض بعض مذاهب العلماء فيها، ونصر القول بعدم وجوبها في التشهد، ولكنه لم يكتف بذلك بل تجاوز إلى التشنيع على الشافعي رحمه الله، وحمل عليه، ونسبه إلى الشذوذ بهذه المسألة، ثم وقع له شيء من التناقض في المسألة إذ عرض لها في "إكمال المعلم" فجعل المسألة من مسائل الخلاف، وجعل القول بالوجوب قول جماعة من أهل العلم، منهم الشافعي وبعض المالكية.
فلم يستحسن ذلك منه العلامة محمد بن محمد بن خيضر، قطب الذين الخضري الشافعي ت 894 تلميذ الحافظ ابن حجر العسقلاني، فجرد قلمه لبيان وجه المسألة، واستيفاء الأدلة والأقوال والمذاهب فيها، ونصر مذهب الشافعي في وجوب الصلاة على النبي (صلى الله عليه السلام) في التشهد الأخير، ودافع عن الإمام الشافعي، واستشنع أن ينسب إليه الشذوذ بهذه المسألة.
فألف كتابه هذا "زهر الرياض في رد ما شنعه القاضي عياض على من أوجب الصلاة على البشير النذير في التشهد الأخير" وبناه على مقدمة، وفصلين.
خلص إلى الفصل الأول: في بيان الأدلة على وجوبها في التشهد الأخير، وأوصلها إلى عشرة أدلة. ثم عرض في الفصل الثاني أدلة من ذهب إلى القول بعدم وجوب الصلاة على النبي (صلى الله عليه وسلم) في التشهد الأخير، وزعم أنها مستحبة، وبيان مأخذهم لذلك، مع ذكر الجواب عن أدلتهم على حسب الطاقة، وحصرها في سبع أدلة من السنة.
