مرت قرون طوال والقدماء يتناقلون الأحاديث عن حماد الرواية، وراح اللاحق يضيف أشياء من عنده على ماقال السابق، حتى غدت صورة الرجل أشبه بالخطوط المتقابلة والمتقاطعة التي تتحرك وسط دائرة واسعة الأقطار. ومن هنا خرج الخبر من الواحد ليقع في مجال المجموع، أي إنه إبتعد عن بنائه الأصلي ليصبح نوعاً من الحكاية الشعبية، أو السرد التاريخي غير المبني على وقائع ثابتة.
ثم جاء المحدثون، فتعاظم الأمر لديهم، وتنادوا بالويل والثبور على الرجل، وأصبح إيراد إسمه مرادفاً للتشويه، والإنكار، والرفض، والفساد، والتخريب... وما إلى ذلك، من العبارات والألفاظ التي كادت تصدئ العقول لتكرارها.
ومع أن هناك من حاول أن يناقش بعضاً من هذه الأخبار الرائجة عنه، إلا أنه سرعان ما يقف محتاراًَ متعجباً، لما يثيره التشكك في أصل الرجل، وتدينه وعلاقاته من ريب وتساؤلات؟ وهكذا دخلت السياسة في تفسير الحدث، وإنعكست تياراتها على معتقده، حتى أصبح يحمل أعباء العصر الذي عاشه، والمرحلة التي إنتقل إليها بعد قيام الدولة العباسية.
وما تسعى إليه هذه الدراسة حلم لمّ أطراف هذه القضية لتوضع في سياقها الذي مرت به، وذلك بمتابعة الموضوع منذ نشوئه. لذلك فقد عالجت الدراسة كل ما يتعلق بحماد، وكان تأثيره بارزاً في كل مرحلة تخطوها، وكان حماد يعيش حياً بين سطورها، ويتألق فذاً كلما أمعنت الدراسة في البحث والتحقيق.
ولا شك أن هذا الشعور الذي تدفق بين طيات الصفحات، كان يدرك مدى حيوية الرجل وقيمة عطائه. وربما كانت هذه الحيوية، وتلك الإيجابية هما أحد العوامل التي جرَّأَت الخصوم عليه، فأسيء فهمه وبولغ في هدمه. وتخلص الدراسة إلى أن حماداً كان عملاقاً من عمالقة الرواية الشفوية، وأنه ذو عقلية متجددة آن الأوان لها أن تعود شامخة بين الشوامخ، فتأخذ دورها الريادي، كما أخذته إبان إزدهارها ومجدها.
