يتناوَلُ هذا الكتاب موضوعَ ’’خبر الإنجيل السارّ‘‘، الذي باتَ كثيرٌ من المؤمنين يرَونَه أمرًا مسلَّمًا به. فالعِظاتُ والتعليمُ السائدُ اليوم تركِّز على أنَّ السيِّد المسيح مات وقام من بين الأموات، ليُنقذَ كلَّ مَن يؤمنُ به من الهلاكَ، ويُعطيه حياةً أبديَّة في السماء. ومع أنَّ هذا التصريحَ صائبٌ، فإنَّه لا يُعبِّر تمامًا عن فحوى الخبر السارِّ الذي عناه السيِّد المسيح ببشارة الملكوت، وقصدَه الرُّسل في القرن الأوَّل بإعلانهم ذاك الخبر لجميع الناس. فما الذي كانوا يقصدونَه أكثرَ من ذلك؟ يستعرضُ الكاتب، وهو باحثٌ ومؤرِّخ بارزٌ في العهد الجديد، الموضوعَ انطلاقًا من بداية الكنيسة، وما كان يعنيه مصطلح ’’الخبر السارّ‘‘ للرُّومان في تلك الحقبة الزمنيَّة، ويمرُّ بنا في بحثٍ ممنهجٍ على وجهاتِ النظر السائدة زمن انطلاق بشارة الملكوت، ويلفتُ أنظارَنا إلى أنَّنا لو رسَمْنا صورةً خاطئةً عن المستقبل، فإنَّ ذلك سيصنع حاضرًا خاطئًا أيضًا، وينتهي بنا إلى الكيفيَّة التي علينا بها أن نصلِّي الخبرَ السارَّ بمعناه السَّليم مستندًا إلى الصلاة الربَّانيَّة.
