مؤلف هذا الكتاب هو العالم الأديب المدقق والمحقق الأديب "أحمد بن يحيى بن فضل الله القرشي" المؤرخ الحجة في معرفة المسالك والممالك، وخطوط الأقاليم والبلدان، وامام الترسل والإنشاء، والعارف بأخبار رجال عصره وتراجمتهم، فقد كان غزير المعرفة بالتاريخ ولا سيما تاريخ الملوك والحكام. وتظهر للقارئ عظمة هذا الرجل إذا علم قصر عمره وما ترك من آثار جليلة من أهمها هذا الكتاب الذي هو الجزء الثامن من موسوعة "مسالك الأبصار في ممالك الأمصار" والذي يتضمن ترجمة لأكثر علماء النصوص وأقوالهم بدءاً من عصر التابعين إلى زمن المصنف-حيث ضمّ ترجمة لما يزيد عن مائة عالم عارف بالله تعالى، ذكر من ترجمتهم ما كانت عليه أحوالهم، وبعضاً من أقوالهم، فكان هذا الجزء كتاب علم لمن يريد العلم، وكتاب تصوف لمن أراد التصوف والتعرف على سير الرجال الصالحين العظماء في هذه الأمة، ففيه كثير من رجال "الرسالة القشيرية" إن لم يكونوا كلهم، وكذلك ضم الكثير من رجال "طبقات الأولياء" لابن الملقن، وبعضاً من تراجم رجال طبقات الصوفية للسلمي، ورجال من رجال "حلية الأولياء" ورجال طبقات الصوفية للمناوي وغيرهم كثير. هذا وقد ذيل الكتاب بتحقيق لطيف هدفه فهم توضيح ما أبهم وتفسير ما يصعب تفسيره.
